Oblate School of Theology, a Roman Catholic school of theology and ministry serving the Southwest United States, invites applications for a Director of Theological Field Education with a preferred start date of August 2026. The candidate should be a Roman Catholic who possesses a firm commitment to the pastoral formation of future and current ministerial leaders in the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian denominations enrolled in the Masters of Divinity (MDiv) program. The candidate will demonstrate a sound grasp of the importance of theological reflection in developing a reflective practice in ministry.

  • Oblate School of Theology, a Roman Catholic school of theology and ministry serving the Southwest United States, invites applications for a Director of Theological Field Education with a preferred start date of August 2026. The candidate should be a Roman Catholic who possesses a firm commitment to the pastoral formation of future and current ministerial leaders in the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian denominations enrolled in the Masters of Divinity (MDiv) program. The candidate will demonstrate a sound grasp of the importance of theological reflection in developing a reflective practice in ministry. The successful candidate will have a familiarity with the Church and broader community of San Antonio, establishing and maintaining ministry placement settings in keeping with curriculum requirements. The ideal candidate will have working relationships with Church and community leaders who might serve as current and potential ministry supervisors. She or he will be prepared to fulfil the canonical requirements expected of a Roman Catholic teaching in a school of theology as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae. The ideal candidate will be prepared to maintain essential records and to teach a sequence of masters-level courses in pastoral/practical theology.

  • The successful candidate will be willing and able to work with colleagues in all aspects of graduate professional theological education in an ecumenically diverse setting. She or he will serve on faculty committees, advise and mentor students, maintain positive relationships with leaders in the local Church, recruit and form supervisors, work collaboratively with formators of MDiv students from diocesan and religious communities, and organize and facilitate theological reflection groups.

  • El o la candidato/a debe ser católico/a y poseer un firme compromiso con la formación pastoral de futuros y actuales líderes ministeriales en la Iglesia Católica, y otras denominaciones cristianas en el programa de Maestría en Divinidad (MDiv). El candidato deberá demostrar un sólido conocimiento de la importancia de la reflexión teológica para el desarrollo de una práctica ministerial reflexiva. Deberá estar familiarizado con la comunidad eclesial de San Antonio para establecer y mantener sitios ministeriales para la realización de prácticas en campo, de acuerdo con los requisitos del plan de estudios. El candidato ideal mantendrá relaciones de trabajo con líderes de la Iglesia y de la comunidad que puedan servir como supervisores de estudiantes durante sus prácticas ministeriales. El director debe cumplir con los requisitos canónicos exigidos a un docente católico en una escuela de teología, según lo establecido en el documento eclesial Ex Corde Ecclesiae. El/La candidato/a ideal deberá mantener la documentación necesaria para el programa e impartir una secuencia de cursos de nivel de maestría en teología pastoral o práctica.

Servirá en comités de profesores, asesorará y servirá de mentor a estudiantes, mantendrá relaciones positivas con líderes de la Iglesia local, reclutará y formará supervisores, trabajará en colaboración con formadores de estudiantes de MDiv provenientes de comunidades diocesanas y religiosas, y organizará y facilitará grupos de reflexión teológica.

  • Inspired by the charism of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, Oblate School of Theology educates, forms, and renews men and women to “preach the Gospel to the most abandoned.” Established in 1903, OST is a vibrant and complex educational institution that provides theological and ministerial leadership in both academic and professional degrees. Its PhD program in Spirituality has grown exponentially in the ten years since its beginning. The school is equally committed to the pastoral and theological education and formation of students from nine dioceses and six different religious orders who are studying for priesthood. Other established programs include academic degrees such as the MA in Theology, the MA in Spirituality, and the MA in Sacred Scripture. Professional programs include the DMin, the MDiv, the MA in Pastoral Ministry, and the Maestría de Artes en Ministerio Pastoral, which is offered bilingually in Spanish and English. OST likewise resources the local church with several vibrant lay certificate programs. Institutes such as the Sankofa Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership, the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Spirituality, and the Instituto de Formación Pastoral provide academic homes for students studying across the degree programs.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Doctoral degree in Ministry or Pastoral Theology preferred. Applicants with a Master’s degree in Pastoral Ministry, Theology, Religious Studies. or Religious Education are also welcome.

  • Experience in Pastoral Ministry

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and administration.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ecumenical, and ethnic backgrounds of members of the school community and local Church.

  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative pedagogy in diverse formats (hybrid, online, face-to-face).

  • Interest in the predominately Hispanic cultural milieu of the church in the Southwestern U.S.

  • Fluency in both Spanish and English is desirable.
