The Master of Divinity with a chaplaincy concentration prepares students for professional ministry in healthcare, correctional, military, campus, corporate, and community-based settings. This degree integrates rigorous theological study, comprehensive ministerial formation, and specialized training in spiritual care to equip graduates to serve as certified, compassionate, competent, and theologically grounded chaplains. The program embodies the Oblate commitment to evangelization, accompaniment, and service among the most vulnerable.

Program Goals:
Preparation of candidates for chaplaincy ministry through academic study and supervised practice integrating theology, life experience, and pastoral practice.
Theological and Ministerial Formation: Provide students with a strong foundation in scripture, theology, tradition, and pastoral practice consistent with the MDiv degree and OST’s mission.
Professional Chaplaincy Preparation: In collaboration with CPE programs, equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for spiritual care in clinical, multicultural, and interfaith environments.
Pastoral Identity and Presence: Form students in emotional maturity, intercultural competence, ethical leadership, and a reflective pastoral identity grounded in the Christian tradition.
Integration of Theory and Practice: Combine academic coursework with clinical pastoral experience to develop the capacity for critical reflection, compassionate presence, and effective spiritual assessment.
Pathway Toward Certification: Prepare graduates to meet prerequisites for national chaplaincy certification.

Persons seeking admission to Oblate School of Theology should have satisfactorily completed a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
For students from other countries the following would be accepted as equivalent: a post-secondary baccalaureate degree awarded for academic study; a degree higher than the post-secondary baccalaureate degree awarded for academic study; or for Master of Divinity applicants educated in seminaries outside the United States or Canada, completion of all philosophical studies necessary for admission to theological education in their home country.
Students who have not earned a bachelor’s degree are encouraged to inquire about eligibility for a competency-based admission.
Usually, eighteen-credit hours of undergraduate philosophy/religious studies, including PL 4323 History and Method of Christian Thought and RS 4101 Reading the Bible, or their approved equivalents, are required before beginning graduate theology.
Participate in an admissions interview focused on suitability for chaplaincy formation.
Demonstrate English proficiency (for international students).
Show evidence of psychological and spiritual readiness for pastoral ministry (may include an assessment tool or interview).
Additional requirements may apply for students entering CPE units.
